Hackers Target Your Steam Account

Digital Trends has an article describing a new phishing technique for stealing your Steam account. A well made web page has been setup for the phishing attack and the article states that it "seems to be legitimate." If you use Steam, it's worth the read.

The Rings Of Power

I waited until Sunday evening to watch the first episode of The Rings Of Power on Amazon Prime. My wife hadn't heard much about the series, so I tried to layout the time frame in how it related to the Lord Of the Rings movies and some other small bits of info. I was fairly certain that I would like the series, but I really didn't know how well my wife would like it. She asked a couple of questions during the show, but I still couldn't really tell how well she was liking it. However, when the first episode ended, there was an immediate, LOUD, one word response because the show had ended. I don't remember her giving a response like that for a movie or TV show and that was a HUGE complement with it coming from her.
Biggest complement the show could have gotten.

UPDATE: We just watched the third episode and when it ended, my wife gave a LOUD two word response because the episode ended. Two out of three episodes! Wow.

California Announces Gas Car Ban -a few days later- Asks Residents To Avoid Charging Electric Vehicles!

Just two nights ago, I was discussing the new regulations recently announced by California that would ban the sale of gasoline powered cars by 2035 with my wife and oldest son. I was stating that it sounded like something that would cause Californians a lot of headaches. My son and wife both said that California probably wouldn't be able to provide the increased electrical demands if it was implemented. A post on Slashdot refers to an article on MyStateLine.com which states that the American Public Power Association is asking residents of California "to limit energy usage during 4 p.m. and 9 p.m" and “The top three conservation actions are to set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles, ...".  Let's see, did California just have a Homer Simpson moment?

Astronomers Discover ‘Water World’

The James Webb Space Telescope has some astronomers from the Université de Montréal interested in further observations of an exoplanet that could be Earth sized with oceans spanning the planet and should have conditions to allow water to exist in liquid form. Check out the details in ExtremeTech's article for more information.

30TB Portable SSD - Not Really!

Getting ripped off on tech from Walmart!? Fortunately, I've never bought anything from Walmart that wasn't as described. But, my memory is rather poor.

arsTechnica has a good article on a portable 30TB SSD drive that is not a SSD drive and does not have a 30TB capacity for sale at Walmart. Tom's Hardware has an article about the 30TB drives also. I did a quick search on Walmart and although I didn't find the 30TB drives, I found two very similar listings with drives up to 16TB which were from the same company listed in the arsTechnica article. Give both of the articles a read and beware of great priced deals that may be too good to be true!

O․MG Elite cable, a scarily stealthy hacker tool

The Verge has an article that describes the cable as "an ordinary, unremarkable USB cable" and the author states that "Holding the cable in my hand, there was really nothing to make me suspicious." With "a web server, USB communications, and Wi-Fi access", the cable would be a definite threat to whatever it's connected to. It's definitely one USB Cable that I Don't Need!
Check out the The Verge's article to see the details.

Australian runs Doom on a What!

There's been a lot of devices over the years that were never made to run a game like Doom, but there's always somebody that manages to get Doom running where you wouldn't expect it to run. Running Doom on a John Deere tractor is probably one I would have never thought of. Check out this article on Techspot to find out how one guy managed to do it.

Microsoft Acquistion of Activision Blizzard

An article on TechRadar gives updates on Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. It talks about Microsoft's discussions with regulators from various countries about the acquisition. They include Microsoft's response to the New Zealand Commerce Commision stating "...Microsoft again reiterated its commitment to not withdraw content from rival platforms, such as the PS5, PS4, or any future PlayStation console." In other words, trust us, we're not going to make everybody use just XBox and PCs. Come on, you know a huge company with control of a large portion of the games available is going to look out for you. You've got to take them at their word! Yeah right. :(
Check out TechRadar's article for more details.

Sinkhole in Chile

I saw a few articles lately on various news sites about the sinkhole in Chile. The hole is about 100 feet across and approximately 200 feet or more deep. The width and depth vary from one news story to the next. The BBC has an article where they discuss the sinkhole in Chile and other sinkholes. The Nerdist has an article where they state that a "massive sinkhole suddenly appeared" and that it "didn’t take long for people to post conspiracy theories about lasers or aliens". So, I said, "DUH! We all saw SG1 bore through the ice with a modified ring device on a Goa'uld scout ship and it created a circular hole!"
Anyway, check out the stories if you haven't already done so and be careful where you step. Could be a sinkhole there about to open up.

Fedora Project Official Support For Raspberry Pi 4

I saw an article on Phoronix.com that Fedora is going to officially support the Raspberry Pi 4. The Fedora Project states on their WIKI site: "With Fedora 37, Raspberry Pi 4 is now officially supported, including accelerated graphics using the V3D GPU." I also saw a tom's Hardware article on Fedora's support of the Raspbery PI 4.

The Raspberry PI has quite a number of operating systems running on it now. The Raspberry Pi OS, which use to be called Raspbian, is Raspberry PI's officially supported operating system. Ubuntu has a web page on installing Ubuntu on a various Raspberry Pi devices. I haven't tried Twister OS, but it seems to be one of the more popular on Raspberry PI.

NASA's Photos of the Cartwheel Galaxy

Some of the images that NASA is able to get are absolutely amazing. The photos of the Cartwheel Galaxy were taken using the James Webb Space Telescope's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). NASA stated that the Cartwheel Galaxy is located about 500 million light-years away in the Sculptor constellation and that the galaxy was a result of a high-speed collision between a large spiral galaxy and a smaller galaxy. NASA's WEB PAGE of the Cartwheel Galaxy contains their photos of the galaxy.

Amazon Social Media Fake Review Fraudsters

Sometimes with product reviews on sites like Amazon, you have to wonder if the reviewer owns or has ever used the product they're reviewing. Or, if they have half a brain or not. I KNOW I only have half a brain, so I leave my stupid comments to myself or post them here.

I saw a couple of articles about Amazon taking legal action against more than 10,000 Facebook groups. In Amazon's press release, they stated that they took legal action against the administrators of teh Facebook groups that were attempting to have fake reviews posted on Amazon. Amazon stated in the press release "Our teams stop millions of suspicious reviews before they're ever seen by customers...". I've had people tell me you can't trust the reviews on Amazon on other online retailers, but I still think it's possible to get a feel about a product's quality, etc from the reviews if you use a cautious approach in what you read in the reviews. Brown Dwarf Sand Clouds?

A Science News article states that "...clouds made of hot silicate minerals are common in celestial objects known as brown dwarfs." So, does that mean brown dwarf flares blast nearby planets and asteroids with sand storms? Nah!

Jet Fuel From Sunlight, Air and Water Vapor?

I read an article on Science News and was surprised that some company hadn't followed up on a 2015 laboratory synthesis of kerosene. The process used water and carbon dioxide with concentrated solar radiation to power a solar reactor and produce the kerosene. So, since nobody else had tried it in the field, the orginal laboratory team setup a proof-of-principle project and the process showed it was feasible. They successfully produced solar kerosene which the article states could be used for production of jet fuel.
